What’s in Your Skincare?
As American’s we trust that the skincare and cosmetic products sold to us are safe, at least I always did. I never even questioned that something harmful could be going into them. There are laws against that right? Well… Sort of… The FDA pays much less attention to skin care and cosmetics then food and drugs. They do prohibit some ingredients but is it enough? We are still being harmed by whats in these products. Here’s a scary thought, 89 percent of all ingredients in cosmetics have not been evaluated for safety by any publicly accountable institution. Just to put this in perspective in Europe 1,328 chemicals have been banned while in the US the FDA has banned 11.
What to watch out for
Formaldehyde, a common chemical, isn’t listed as an ingredient in our beauty products because it isn’t added purposefully. Rather, it is released over time, and manufacturers know and expect this. YIKES! This chemical is known to cause health problems and is found in lots of shampoos, even the tearless bottles for children.
Parabens are a group of compounds widely used as anti-microbial preservatives in food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics products, including underarm deodorants. Parabens get absorbed through the skin, gastrointestinal tract, and blood. Researchers in the U.K. found concentrations of six different parabens in 20 human breast tumors. This study stresses the need for more research on the highly possible link between products containing parabens and breast cancer.
Your skin needs to be able to breathe in order to do its job of releasing toxins from the body. When you use skincare with mineral oil it is like wrapping your body in plastic wrap and not allowing it to breath or even absorb what it needs like moisture. When the skin is robbed of moisture it ages prematurely. Other health concerns connected with lots of use of mineral oil are negative hormonal effects, including ovarian dysfunction, endometriosis, miscarriages, and damage to the immune system, Anderson states.
Plasticizing chemicals that are probable human reproductive or developmental toxins and endocrine disruptors. Phthalates have been known to cause reproductive birth defects in lab animals, especially males.
Other things to watch out for
Guano (bat feces)
Its so important to get educated about whats in your products. It might take a little more time but read the labels at the store. Yes, less harmful products may be a bit pricey but personally I’d rater pay more and feel safe then put harmful chemicals on my skin.
